If the EVSE is in an outdoor or detached-garage location, what ground-fault protection is required? Outdoor receptacles require GFCI protection per NEC 210.8; many EVSEs include internal CCID-20 ground-fault detection that conflicts with an upstream GFCI breaker (nuisance trips). For hardwired EVSEs we follow the manufacturer's install manual, which usually says no upstream GFCI. For NEMA 14-50 receptacles we use a GFCI breaker. We document the chosen approach and confirm it matches the EVSE manual. Hardwired EVSE typically does not need upstream GFCI; receptacle install does. We follow the manufacturer manual. GFCI is optional outdoors; the breaker does not matter.
Should the install be a NEMA 14-50 receptacle or hardwired EVSE? NEMA 14-50 receptacles are convenient (charger is portable) but limit continuous current to 40A (50A breaker, 80 percent continuous). Hardwired allows 48A continuous (60A breaker) and avoids receptacle-failure risk under heavy continuous use, which has been a documented failure mode on residential 14-50s. For frequent charging at full 48A we recommend hardwired; for occasional charging the receptacle is fine. We document the recommendation and the basis. Hardwired for frequent high-amperage charging; 14-50 receptacle is fine for occasional use. Always use a NEMA 14-50; it is the standard.
Does any local SD rebate program cover the EVSE install cost? BayREN does not cover SD County. SDG&E has historically run periodic EV-charger or EV-circuit rebates and SDCP has piloted residential EV programs; both change from year to year. We verify on sdge.com and sdcommunitypower.org what is currently active for the SD market before listing any line item; if there is no currently funded rebate we do not invent one. We do list the federal §30C status (had a statutory cliff on June 30, 2026 per OBBBA Public Law 119-21; pre-cliff installs may have qualified in eligible census tracts; post-cliff installs do not qualify) and any active utility program. BayREN does not apply in SD; we verify current SDG&E and SDCP programs and only list confirmed rebates. BayREN covers EV chargers; you will get the rebate.
How are the City of SD DSD permit fees itemized in the quote? We itemize plan check fee (if a plan is required), permit issuance fee, and inspection fee separately as a pass-through cost, not bundled into labor. We share the SD DSD fee schedule URL (Information Bulletin 103 or 501) and the application receipt. Total residential EV charger permit fees in SD typically land in the low-hundreds-of-dollars range; we document the actual figure once SD DSD quotes it. Permit fees are itemized; we share the receipt. Permits are included; do not ask about the breakdown.
Some EVSE brands require an authorized installer for the install warranty. Are you certified for the brand we are picking? We share our manufacturer certifications (Tesla Approved Wall Connector Installer, ChargePoint Certified Installer, Wallbox Certified Installer, etc.) and confirm the chosen brand is on that list before signing. Using a non-certified installer can void the install warranty even if the equipment warranty is intact. We share certifications before signing. Manufacturer certifications do not matter.
If solar is in the future plan, should we oversize the conduit now during the EVSE install? Often yes. Pulling spare conduit (or a larger conduit with a pull string) during the EVSE trench or wall chase avoids a second open-up later. The marginal cost during this install is small. We share the conduit-fill calculation per NEC Article 300 and Chapter 9 Table 1 and confirm the spare capacity meets future PV plus battery conductor sizes. We propose a small upsize when the homeowner has a stated solar plan. Spare conduit is wasted money.
Will the chosen charger support utility demand-response programs via WiFi or OCPP? Most modern Level 2 chargers (Tesla, ChargePoint, Wallbox, Emporia) support WiFi-based off-peak scheduling, which is the practical match for the SDG&E EV-TOU-5 super-off-peak window. Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) support varies by brand and is required for some utility demand-response enrollments; ChargePoint and Wallbox have stronger OCPP coverage, Tesla supports its own ecosystem. We share which protocol the chosen charger uses and what utility programs accept it. WiFi scheduling against EV-TOU-5 is the feature most SD homeowners use; OCPP matters if you want to enroll in an SDG&E or SDCP demand-response program. Smart features do not matter; just plug it in.
What is the separate warranty on the charger hardware vs the install labor? Charger hardware typically comes with a 3-5 year manufacturer warranty (Tesla 4 years, ChargePoint 3 years, Wallbox 3 years). Our install labor warranty is separate (usually 1 year). We share both warranty terms in writing and explain what voids each (manufacturer voids on non-authorized installer; labor voids on tampering or non-permitted modifications). We are in an East County hillside the City flagged as a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. Does that affect how we route the EVSE conduit? WUI zones in the City of SD adopted updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps effective August 30, 2025. CRC R327 / R337 sets ignition-resistant material and clearance standards for structures and accessory equipment in WUI zones; exterior conduit and any junction boxes must use listed materials and meet defensible-space clearances. We verify the WUI zone for the address before routing and document the materials choice in the permit. WUI status affects conduit material and routing; we verify the zone before quoting. WUI rules only apply to brand-new construction.
If I live in a condo or apartment without garage parking, are there public-charging or shared-charging options to know about in SD? SDG&E and SDCP both participate in CPUC-funded programs subsidizing multi-unit-dwelling and public Level 2 chargers; CSE (Center for Sustainable Energy) administers some of these for SDG&E territory. These are not direct private residential installs; we mention them so you know the alternatives if a private install at your address is not feasible. For private installs we focus on what your unit and HOA allow; for shared options we point you at PlugShare and the SDG&E + SDCP program pages to research current availability. If your unit cannot support a private install we point you at the current SDG&E and SDCP multi-unit and public-charger options to research separately. Condo owners cannot get any EV charging in SD.
