electrical permit

As of 2026-05-31, residential Level 2 (240V) EV charger installations in San José require an electrical permit. A mechanical permit is required only when the charger manufacturer specifies use of mechanical ventilation. Permit applications are submitted via the SJPermits.org Application Wizard. At final inspection, the charger must carry a UL 2202 listing number. The application typically requires the panel rating, the charger's EV load amperage, and the EVSE location relative to the panel and service entrance.
